Tennant Commends Tomblin, Gainer For Transparency Website; Says Secretary of State’s Office Will Continue To Be “Open and Engaging”

Charleston, W.Va. – Secretary of State Natalie E. Tennant commended Senate President Earl Ray Tomblin, who is currently acting as Governor, and State Auditor Glen Gainer today on the launch of the website www.transparencywv.org
The website allows West Virginians to see how taxpayer money is being spent.

Transparency and accountability have always been a part of the Secretary of State’s Office. Since January of 2009, the Secretary of State’s Office has been a leader in the live webcasting of important office events such as special election ballot position drawings and the posting of unedited videos of budget presentations and committee meetings.

"I applaud the Governor and Auditor on this website and we will work hand in hand with them to continue to let the citizens of West Virginia know what their government is doing and how we are spending their money,” Tennant said. “From day one we have been dedicated to open and engaging government. We’ve been very forthcoming with the people of West Virginia about exactly what we do here in the Secretary of State’s Office."

The Secretary of State's office has conducted live webcasts of press conferences, election day events, State Election Commission meetings and posted videos of everyday operations. Tennant said her office works to make state government less intimidating and confusing to citizens. She said for years her office has also used social media websites, like Twitter and Facebook, so citizens can know what the office is doing. She has used the video chat program Skype to discuss her duties with school children across the state and also for interviews with Charleston TV stations when she was halfway around the world.

“I am glad that the people of this state will now be able to keep as close an eye on taxpayer money as they can the Secretary of State’s Office.”

The Secretary of State’s website also has searchable databases of every registered charity in West Virginia, licensed businesses, and rules filed with the Administrative Law Division.
