Secretary Tennant Statement on Conviction of Man Who Pulled Gun On Secretary of State Investigator

5/11/2012

Charleston, W.Va. - West Virginia Secretary of State Natalie E. Tennant issued the following statement after James Metheny of Midkiff was convicted on charges that he pulled a gun on investigators in Lincoln County.

One of the investigators was with the Secretary of State's Office. The other was an FBI agent.

Metheny was found guilty of assault of a federal officer and use of a firearm in a crime of violence.

"This conviction clearly shows the seriousness of the crimes involved. Violations of election law are not just administrative or procedural. The perpetrators are criminals committing criminal acts with malicious intent. I am glad our investigator and the FBI agent were not hurt - they could have been killed - in this incident."
