Secretary of State’s Office Adds More Online Services For Business Owners, Banking Industry

Charleston, W.Va. – The West Virginia Secretary of State’s Office has added more online services for businesses, now allowing online Uniform Commercial Code filings and UCC searches.

Since its launch on October 1, more than 440 customers have submitted online UCC filings.

The Uniform Commercial Code is a lengthy act that was first developed in the 1940’s. Because of the increasing frequency of interstate commerce, UCC was developed to synchronize state laws and also to allow individual states to pass laws to address their unique circumstances.
Banks file UCC financing statements with the Secretary of State when they give loans to consumers or small businesses who use goods or commercial or farm property as collateral.

The West Virginia Secretary of State's UCC online system will enable customers to submit UCC financing statements to the West Virginia Secretary of State’s Office. The system will also enable customers to search the UCC database, order certified and non-certified searches, and download documents directly to a computer.
“This new online UCC system will especially help those in the banking industry,” Secretary of State Natalie E. Tennant said. “When a UCC filing is made, customers can make their payment conveniently and securely with a credit card or eCheck. It allows people to find out the information they need and file important documents without having to stand in a line or make a trip to the post office. And with immediate processing, there’s no waiting for it to be entered by hand. It just helps the entire process operate more smoothly and more efficiently.”

This is the latest online service to be added to the Secretary of State’s website. The online annual report filing for business owners has become extremely popular, with about 56,400 filed online in 2013. The Secretary of State’s Office also offers an interactive online chat feature that connects a business owner directly to a Business and Licensing Specialist. Business owners can also obtain a Certificate of Authorization or Certificate of Existence online.
