 Candidate Filing Calendar 

    The Candidate Certificate of Announcement is accepted by the following offices:

  • Secretary of State for all offices on the ballot in more than one county and all State Senate and House of Delegates candidates.
  • County Clerk for all offices on the ballot in only one county.

 

    Candidate Filing Period

    • January 11: Candidate Filing Period begins
    • January 30 (midnight): Last day to file in person at correct filing office. Secretary of State open until midnight. County Clerk's offices open at hours announced locally.
    • January 30 (midnight): Last day to mail complete filing; must bear U.S. postmark showing mailing before midnight. Do not use non-postal express delivery service.

    Candidate Personal Financial Disclosure Filing

     

    • January 11 - February 10: Candidate must file personal financial disclosure with WV Ethics Commission within ten days after filing certificate of announcement. Get the disclosure form here.

    Candidate Withdrawal/ Deadline to Withdraw from Ballot

    • February 16 : Last day for notarized statement of withdrawal from the ballot to be received by appropriate filing officer in order for candidate to have name removed from ballot.

    Uniform Drawing Date for Primary Election

    • 9:00 a.m., February 23: County Clerks in each county conduct drawing for ballot position for all offices in which more than one candidate has filed for nomination or election.

    Write-in Filing Deadline for Primary Election

     

    • March 30 : Last day for filing of official write-in candidate for Board of Education to be received.

    Primary Election

    • April 21-May 8: EARLY VOTING
    • May 11: PRIMARY ELECTION DAY (Polls open 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.)

    Independent and Minor Party Candidate Filing Deadlines

    • August 1: Deadline for minor party and independent candidates doing nominating petitions to file petitions for nomination.

    Special Filing Period for Board of Education

    Filing to Fill Vacancy on Board of Education

    • August 2-17: Candidate filing period for unexpired term of Board of Education to fill vacancy occuring after the close of candidate filing (not later than 84 days before general election).

    Deadline to Apply for Withdrawal for Extenuating Circumstances

     

    • August 10: Last day for nominee to apply to State Election Commission for withdrawal due to extenuating circumstances.

    • 9:00 a.m., August 24: County Clerks in each county conduct drawing for ballot position for those offices in which more than one candidate will be elected.

     

    Write-in Filing Deadline for General Election

     

    • September 21: Last day for filing of official write-in candidate for offices on the ballot in the General Election to be received by the appropriate election official.
