 Campaign Finance Laws and Rules

The Law

Campaign finance laws have changed many times over the years since the first requirements were established in 1908.  A major revision occurred in the 1976, about the same time stronger laws were adopted at the federal level.

In 2001, 2002 and 2005 the Legislature made numerous changes to campaign finance rules and regulations.

The Rules

Campaign finance rules developed by the State Election Commission add definition and detail to the law to assist candidates, committees and the public in understanding the interpretation of the law.  The rules have been approved by the Legislature, and therefore have the force of law.
