Tennant: Technology Keeps Government Open And Engaging

10/20/2009

Huntington, W.Va. – Using technology effectively can save time for business owners and taxpayer money for the state, Secretary of State Natalie E. Tennant said at the 2009 Create WV Conference in Huntington.

Tennant joined in a panel discussion on how to best use social media and technology to reach the people of West Virginia. Laura Jordan, Marketing Director at the Charleston YWCA, and Julie Hewett of Create Huntington were also part of the panel.

The recently unveiled upgraded website for the Secretary of State’s office combines ease of use with function, Tennant said. People who are looking for information on charities, businesses, candidates, or voter registration are just one click away when they are on the front page of www.wvsos.com.

Tennant also urged business owners to file their paperwork online by going to the online portal www.business4wv.com, which is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“Open and engaging government is something I live by,” Tennant said. “It’s important to make people feel like they can come to the Secretary of State’s office without having to drive five hours from Martinsburg, two hours from Wirt County, or even an hour from Huntington or Anstead. Having all these services online will save business owners time and money.”

Tennant also said she will continue to keep people updated through the social media sites Facebook and Twitter, because “people deserve to know what their elected officials are doing.”

The members of the panel also said keeping people up to date takes up a very small portion of their day. Twitter, for example, limits posts to just 140 characters. Tennant said another plus to using Facebook and Twitter is that they are free.

Other topics at the third-annual conference include creating green jobs and how to produce webinars.
