National Notary Public Day Is November 7

Charleston, W.Va. – Saturday is a day of recognition and appreciation for the more than 45,000 notaries public in West Virginia and the more than 4.8 million nationwide.

Today’s notaries are vital to the free flow of commerce and to the many highly sensitive personal transactions that transpire in daily life. By properly executing their duties as impartial witnesses, notaries help deter fraud and promote the integrity and reliability of document transactions.

The Secretary of State’s Office performs essential administrative and regulatory functions such as processing notary applications, maintaining notary records, certifying notary authority and handling complaints.

On the Secretary of State’s website at www.wvsos.com, people can search a database of every notary in the state. The search can be done by name or by county. Duties and restrictions on a notary are also listed on the website.

“Think of all the documents you’ve had to get notarized,” Secretary of State Natalie E. Tennant said. “Try to imagine buying a home or even adopting a child without a notary. Notaries make sure people who are signing important documents are who they say they are. That’s a great responsibility on their part and I appreciate notaries for taking on that responsibility.”

In the next year, the Office of Secretary of State plans on taking an active roll in revising the current Notary Act, implementing educational training of notaries, and moving toward the process of E-notarization all in an effort to provide notaries the tools they need to be a successful and knowledgeable notary.

The date of November 7 was chosen as Notary Public Day in recognition of the day that America’s first notary, Thomas Fugill, was appointed.  Fugill was appointed by the Colony of New Haven in 1639.
